Town Hall Huddersfield
The Huddersfield Choral Society

6.30pm - As guests of the President, Mrs Brenda Mosley, David and I attended a lovely drinks reception where we were introduced to many people.

At 7.30pm The Huddersfield Choral Society performed The Messiah.

Both David and I felt it was a great privilege to be present at this magnificent gathering. As guests of the President we sat in the large box facing the stage.

At the Reception we met the very charming Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe, The Mayor and Mayoress of Huddersfield, the High Sheriff and his wife, Jeremy and Martine Burton, as well as Roger Bowers (last year's High Sheriff) and his wife Lynda - . I had met both High Sheriffs at a meeting at Paddy Dents (Chairman of the High Sheriff's Association of England and Wales), some time ago.

The singing was truly wonderful and many members of the Society themselves said that it had been a special evening. The voices were magnificent.

Afterwards, we enjoyed an excellent buffet supper where again we were delighted to meet some of the people who have been to St Martin's Church, Windermere over the years. I spoke to Joseph Cullen and was delighted to learn that the Huddersfield Choral Society would all be pleased to come to St Martins again some time in the future.

BROUGH CHRISTMAS FAIR

At the invitation of Mr John Dawson I arrived at the Castle Hotel at Brough for 12.30 (having previously made time to look at some of the stalls and watch the procession going down the main street). The Chairman of Eden District Council,Cllr Malcolm Smith and The Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Bill Graham, and their wives were already there and we were soon joined by The Bishop of Carlisle, The Rt. Revd James Newcome. Soon after we went to the dining room for a buffet lunch where there was lots of discussion and laughter.

1.30
I read the Proclamation in memory of the Charter given to Brough in Stainmoor in The County of Westmorland in perpetuity. The Bishop then spoke and said a prayer and wished everyone well for Christmas.

After this we all processed down the main street where all the young and local people were splendidly attired in festive costumes.

Before we left, Mr Dawson kindly showed us some of the indoor stalls and introduced us to various people.

This whole project must have required a tremendous effort on the part of those involved and the organisers hope that it will become something that will happen on an annual basis.

VISIT OF HRH The Prince of Wales at Workington

I was asked bty the Lord Lieutenant if I would meet HRH The Prince of Wales at Workington at 15.15hours and was advised that as he was visiting the North Side Community Centre at Seaton it would be advisable if I allowed ample time to get there. I therefore left home at 12pm and in fact reached Seaton via Maryport at 14.00 hours. This enabled me to meet the people I was to present both at the Community Centre and later at the temporary train platform.

15.10
HRH arrived by helicopter at Seaton

15.20 - arrived by car at the Northside Community Centre where I greeted him. I introduced him to Tony Cunningham, MP for Workington, and Joe Bell, Manager of the Centre. We then accompanied him to the temporary Medical Centre on the first floor and the food stores on the ground floor. During this time I left to go on to the temporary train platform where I was to present Mrs J Kaye, Network Rail and Northern Rail Driver Team Manager, Mr Carl Hewitt, to HRH when he arrived.
HRH talked to several construction workers which delighted them all. He was very positive in his comments and everyone seemed delighted by his visit.

It was dark when we started home and it was plain to see the terrific delays that the loss of the bridges had caused to the local people.

Tuesday 24th November 2009

I was invited to Barrow Crown Court to sit with His Hon Judge Batty QC, but was told the court would not be sitting.

NOTE: Because my PA has been off due to a family bereavement, I am struggling to catch up with paperwork.

Thursday 19th November 2009

On Thursday 19th November we awoke to most terrible weather. (I had two appointments that day, which I shall mention later). However, the weather turned into an unprecedented storm throughout the day and night, and many people in Cumbria found that their plans, and in some cases their lives, had changed.

9.40am
David and I were to have been with Roger Bingham, the Chairman of Cumbria County Council, at County Hall, Kendal but because of flooding we were unable to go.

7.00pm
I was to have been at the Roundthorn Hotel at Penrith as a guest of the Chief Constable Craig Mackey, but the Police Ceremony Awards were cancelled because of the
storms and flooding.

I don't think at this stage anyone realised what was to come.

JUDGE'S SERVICE - CARLISLE CATHEDRAL

The 'big day', and the weather was fine for the morning and some sun! A beautiful service with wonderful music and an excellent choir. The Master of Music at the Cathedral is Mr Jeremy Suter, and I was so grateful to him for all that he had done. A good friend from the Cathedral had helped me earlier to choose most of the music and we had two of my favourite hymns. The Old Testament reading read by His Honour Judge Batty QC, and the Gospel was read by The High Court Judge, The Hon Mr Justice David Clarke.

There must have been nearly 300 people in the Cathedral with friends from St Martin's Church, Windermere, children from The Pennine Way School, Carlisle - The Lakes School and St Anne's School, Windermere (one of whom was my granddaughter Charlotte.

The Procession was most impressive, and everyone remarked on how colourful it was.

Coffee and biscuits were served in the Refectory and the Priors Kitchen for everyone. After which I had asked if some of the children could visit Durranhill Police HQ after refreshments at the Cathedral. I am told they had a wonderful time and enjoyed being locked in the cells for a few minutes! I was so grateful to Chief Superintendent Johnson and everyone who arranged this.

Haverigg Prison, Millom
(Remembrance Parade)

10.15am
Arrival and coffee
10.45am
THE REMEMBRANCE PARADE

We were greeted by Martin Farquhar, the Prison Governor. He felt that those who had lost their lives in the wars should be remembered and so he instigated this service, which he intends to make an annual event. There were many visitors including the Bishop of Carlisle, Cllr Wormstrup and Mrs Lee Hodgson, the Mayor of Barrow Mrs Dorothy Dawes, Chief Constable and Mrs Mackey, and members of various organisations.

The service was taken by Reverend Martin Jones and was very moving indeed.

After the placing of wreaths and a two minute silence the Bugler sounded 'Reveilli' to end the silence and Martin read the Kohima Epitaph and incredible poem Dulceret Decorum Est and then concluded with a prayer and blessing.

Afterwards we enjoyed a buffet lunch.

The Dean was extremely helpful and after talking about the seating plan, the Procession and the Order of Service he kindly heard me practise the PREFACE and James got the 'feel' of the pulpit.

We stopped on the motorway for a sandwich on the way home.

We are to visit the "state of the art" control centre in the New Year to see how it is operated.

Monday 9th November 2009

Windermere Fire Station

It was suggested to me on my last visit to the Fire Station that I might like to bring a party of people to attend a HEARTSTART-Emergency Life Support Training evening. Cumbria fire and Rescue Service are working in partnership with the British Heart Foundation to teach members of the public what to do in a life-threatening emergency: simple skills that can save lives.

I invited 7 friends to join me and we had a most interesting and informative two hours with instruction from Suzanne Wainwright of the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service. We were also shown a very realistic and informative DVD.

We came away feeling it was a most worthwhile evening and that we had learnt something very important. There were also some amongst us who, when prompted, admitted that their homes had no fire alarms!
Cumbria Fire and Rescue are anxious for the general public to know about these courses which they are happy to do for small or large groups of people, as well as for schools and organisations.

You never know - doing this could save a life - why not contact Suzanne on her website - cumbriafire.gov.uk or email her on suzanne.wainwright@cumbriacc.gov.uk.
Or you can telephone her on 01539 797647.

12.15pm

We visited Manna House - which was set up in 2002 to provide housing advice, advocacy and support for those in the Kendal and South Lakes area who are homeless or vulnerably housed, and talked with Cllr Jonathan Brook (Chairman of South Lakeland District Council) and members of staff. We were all very impressed by what we saw and learnt.

We returned to The Brewery Arts Centre for lunch and continued talking about plans for a further meeting regarding Cumbria Crimebeat in February 2010.

We all felt it had been a fruitful day.

Sunday 1st November 2009

A well-attended and lovely service conducted by The Reverend Susan Wilson, with a most excellent Address by The Venerable George Howe.

I attended the above AGM, which was followed by a delicious luncheon attended by 166 guests. David joined me for the luncheon.

10.30am
YPRES BLOCK, CARLISLE CASTLE

I was made very welcome by Colonel T M McMullen MBE, Commandant of Cumbria Army Cadet Force who was accompanied by Deputy Lt Col John Wilson. After coffee and a general introduction I was shown a DVD about the work done with the Cadets. Later I was introduced to Major John Jones, who showed and explained the weapon systems to me. He is the Training Safety Adviser (TSA) based permanently at the Castle but belongs to HQ42 (NW) Brigade in Preston.

I was also introduced to Major Paul Candler who is the Cadet Executive Officer. He leads the permanent staff element in the HQ. He kindly accompanied me to my next venue.

We discussed that it would be a good idea for Col McMullen to meet The High Sheriff Elect, Mr James Carr, before my Term of Office is over.

12.30pm
The Courts, Earl Street, Carlisle

Once again I had the priviledge of presenting three Court Awards. These were awarded by His Hon Judge Batty, QC. but Her Hon Judge Forrester Chaired the Ceremony in his absence.

3 very public spirited people received Awards, including one very especially brave lady.

I was invited by Judge Forrester to stay for lunch and also met Claire Hensman and Susie Bagot who were spending the day as her guests.

Thursday 5th November 2009

MORNING
I had a most interesting morning at Workington Magistrates' Court arranged once again by Tim Jepson.

I was greeted by Gail Inglis, Bench Chairman of West Allerdale and Keswick, who I have met several times before. She and Tim kindly showed me around the Court and introduced me to several members of staff. She also introduced me to those sitting in the Court and asked me to say a few words about the Office of High Sheriff.

A very interesting morning. I hope to sit in Whitehaven and Barrow in the New Year.

AFTERNOON

The Rising Sun Drop-in Centre in Workington

Met in the afternoon with Paul Lee from the Trust and Roger Hart from the Cumbria Community Foundation, (who have recently expanded their services from 6pm to 9pm),to award a cheque for £750 to The Rising Sun. Current users are very enthusiastic about the extended HOURS. As on my first visit, I was very impressed with what is done here. Photos were taken by The Times & Star.

Sunday 8th November 2009

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
9.30am
As a guest of The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr John Bateson, I attended at the Cenotaph at Kendal and placed a High Sheriff's wreath after The Mayor and Chairman of South Lakeland District Council, Jonathan Brooks.

Many local dignitaries and services were represented there and it was a most moving occasion.

From the Cenotaph we processed to The Mayor's Parlour (where two types of coffee were served. One with rum, a local custom, and then processed to the Parish Church of Holy Trinity for a service of Remembrance and Reconciliation.

A most moving service conducted by The Revd, who I gather is shortly to leave Holy Trinity for Ireland. Lessons read by The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr John Bateson and Tim Farron MP, and a moving Address by The Revd Ashley Henderson.

After the service (another local custom) people were offered a small tot of whiskey. We then processed back to the Town Hall to witness the march past.

Thursday 5th November 2009

I have not had time to write my BLOGS recently and hope to do so next week.

Although I have not had as many engagements during the last ten days, I have been exceptionally busy with admin.

Some of the visits I make take time to arrange and of course deserve my written appreciation. And the visits I arrange round the county take a lot of time, not just arranging them, but involving people to take part and confirming details to all parties.

At the same time preparations for the Judge's Service at Carlisle Cathedral on the 17th November have been ongoing for some time, including invitations and catering arrangements.

I am also thinking about Christmas card lists of names etc, so it is a busy time.

I could not do all this without the wonderful help of Katy, my PA. But she is only part-time and sometimes we both wish there were more hours in a day!

KENDAL MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Tim Jepson The Acting Justices Clerk for Cumbria had arranged for me to visit here for the morning. I received a warm welcome from The Bench Chairman for South Lakeland District, Ruth Otway and other magistrates and officials at the Court.

I am of course only allowed to observe, but found the proceedings most interesting and am full of admiration to those people who give their time to the Magistracy.

I am due to visit Workington Magistrates Court in November.

BISHOP JAMES NEWCOME'S ENTHRONEMENT - CARLISLE CATHEDRAL

To ensure that as many people as possible were involved in the service, it took place between St Cuthbert's Church and Carlisle Cathedral. Both Churches were filled to capacity.

The County and Court procession walked from the Robing Room at the Resources Centre at the Cathedral to St Cuthbert's where the service began at 2pm.

At about 2.45pm we processed to the Cavel Cross in the City Centre, for the new Bishop to be welcomes by the Mayor of Carlisle and the Lord Lieutenant. The Bishop blessed the city and the county; and then proceeded to the Cathedral.

At this point Worshippers in St Cuthberts saw the remainder of the service through T V Screens.

It was a truly inspiring service with an equally inspiring address by the Bishop. After the service refreshments were served and the Bishop and his family mingled with their guests.

LADIES HIGH SHERIFF LUNCHEON
ROYAL THAMES YACHT CLUB, 60 KNIGHTSBRIDGE, LONDON

The Annual Ladies Luncheon, organised this year by Elizabeth Mills, The High Sheriff of Rutland.

The lunch is organised primarily for High Sheriffs in Nomination to meet with and talk to High Sheriffs in Office. I found this event very useful last year (held at a different venue). I met a lot of people I had seen last year and at subsequent events. It is such a good opportunity to share experiences and exchange ideas.

There is always a speaker and this year Elizabeth Mills introduced Mrs Pat Dubas, Principal of The Samworth Enterprise Academy in Leicester. This is a Church of England School and there is a Church situated in the school. Pat has been involved with the Academy from its inception two years ago. The Academy is located in an area of social deprivation, attended by children from numerous races and aged between 3 and 17. It has been a huge success.

Everyone was inspired by all that she told us and my comment to her was "if only she could tour the country telling people what has been achieved and how it has been done"

CUMBRIA NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION
UNIVERSITY OF CUMBRIA - NEWTON RIGG CAMPUS

9.40 for 10.00am.

At the invitation of Dr John Perkins, Chairman of C.N.W.A. I was invited to present the High Sheriff's Shield.

We were warmly greeted by Dr Perkins, his wife and the Vice Chairman Judith Derbyshire, and offered coffee and delicious danish pastries after which we attended the formal AGM.

The Chief Constable then said a few words about the recipient (who had had no idea that he was to receive the award) It proved to be ex Sergeant Andrew Barnes, who recently retired from the Constabulary after being a primary source of contact for Neighbourhood Watch with the Police for many years. He had done an outstanding job and well deserved the award.

I made a short speech and then presented the shield to Andrew Baines. From the audience applause it was obvious that this was a very popular choice.

After the presentation Councillor Roger Bingham gave an excellent and amusing talk and then there was a 'comfort break' after which my husband and I were very sorry to have to leave for another engagement, thereby missing addresses by The Chief Constable and The Chief Fire Officer.

VISIT TO JAMES CROPPER PLC - PAPER MILL AT BURNESIDE
Kindly arranged by Mr James Cropper

Nineteen guests from various parts of the County met at the Mill Office for a guided tour of the Paper Mill, given by four excellent guides - Kim Gilbert (Export Manager), Geoff Simpson (Development Manager), David Freton (Health and Safety Instructor) and Steve Oxley (Paper making Operations Manager).

After a short introductory talk given by Alun Lewis, the Chief Executive, we were divided into three parties of 5 and 1 of 4 and the tour took approximately 2 and a half hours. We were made very aware of the health and safety regulations.

It is a fascinating process seeing pulp being dyed and dried and then turned into enormous rolls of paper which is exported all over the world as well as the UK.

James Cropper Plc are specialist paper manufacturers of low volume, high qualify uncoated and deep coloured papers. They are paper manufactueres of distinction with all the knowledge, skills and craftmanship gained in over 160 years of paper manufacturing and the paper supplies industry. As Europe's most modern coloured and specialist paper mill, James Cropper are paper suppliers in custom colours, weights or specifications, to any global destination. They also manufacture paper for Remembrance Day Poppoes.

When we returned to the Meeting Room we were welcomed by Mr Cropper and given refreshments and a short talk about the history of the Mill and how it came into the ownership of the Cropper family.

SILVER JUBILEE APPEAL - CANCER CARE LAKES CENTRE
BLACKHALL ROAD, KENDAL

2.30pm

I was asked to say a few words and cut the ribbon at The Official Opening of the work that has been done at the Kendal Centre. The building work funded by The Silver Jubilee Appeal, provided a Dedicated Children's and Young People's Unit and a new Art Room, as well as an increased Therapy Room to provide the resources needed to manage the growing client base.

A delicious lunch, prepared by Christine Blease, where I met with the Patron Lady Shuttleworth, Chairman Robert Webb, and the retiring Chairman, the highly thought of Professor Malcolm McIllmurray, and Committee members. Also Peter Hearne, who manages the Centres at Lancaster and Kendal with great skill.

My first husband died from cancer in 1983 and at that time there was not even adequate pain control available to him. it was wonderful to see the free support, counselling and theraputic services that are available to people affected by cancer in the South Lakes and in North Lancashire.

I was very pleased when I arrived, to meet The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Christian Wewer, and also the High Sheriff Elect for Cumbria, James Carr.

After speeches given by Nigel Burgess and Tony Harratt, we were introduced to the winners of the Awards.

First prize was awarded to:
YOUNG PIONEERS:

The aim is to make it 'cool to care' and to help young people advance in life by improving their social welfare and developing their key skills so they can become mature and responsible individuals.

Second prize to:
MC ROCKERS:
whose primary aim was to raise the awareness of the dangers of young people carrying knives within the Rotherham area of South Yorkshire following the increase of knife crime nationally in recent years and the media attention following this rise.

and then -

Third prize to:
CHOICES:
Wilsthorpe Business and Enterprise College in Long Eaton has an excellent reputation for producing documentary films about Derbyshire and was commissioned by Derbyshire Police and Crimebeat to produce a film concerning young people. 'Choices' focuses on the problems of street robbery, particularly involving mobile 'phones, showing how these items can be attractive to potential thieves and how young people can pr3event themselves being victims.

All the young people in each of these Groups were most impressive and had obviously learnt a great deal from what they had done.

The whole morning was very worthwhile, and we were able to use the Conference Room and eat an excellent lunch, by courtesy of the Owner of The Royal National Hotel.

12.30pm

Planning for this special day started in April or May and was a very great success, and we were blessed with a beautiful day.

Muncaster Castle is a wonderful venue and HRH was very impressed with it, and as she left said she hoped to come again.

Princess Alexandra was accompanied by her Lady-in-waiting, Lady Mary Mumford and her Private Secretary Mrs Diana Duke. She was greeted by The Lord Lieutenant and Mrs Cropper when she arrived and Mrs Iona Frost-Pennington. The Lord Lieutenant then presented HRH to my husband (I had been presented to her the previous evening)The Mayor of Copeland, Cllr Henry Wormstrup and Ms Lee Hodson, The Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Cllr Roger Bingham, Acting Corporate Director Adult & Cultural Services, Cumbria County Council, Mr Richard Parry, and the Acting Chief Executive of Copeland Borough Council, Mr Fergus McMorrow.

Iona Frost-Pennington then presented her husband, Peter Frost-Pennington, her parents Patrick and Philida Gordon Duff-Pennington, and their children, and the representatives of The Complimentary Care Centre, Hospice at Home, and also Mrs Joan Capp (with companion) and Mrs Judith Johnston.

Thereafter I introduced her to my own guests from the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus, The Princess Youth Business Trust, Cumbria Community Foundation (Crimebeat), Nuclear Management Partners Limited, The Hadfield Trust, My Chaplain, My elder son and his wife and two of my grandchildren, and not least my PA. HRH expressed great pleasure in seeing Dr and Mrs Geoffrey Thompson and Mrs Olive Clarke again.

The Royal party departed by car at 13.40 accompanied by the Police and The Lord Lieutenant and Mrs Cropper. Everyone present felt it was a special day and were charmed by the very real interest the Princess expressed.

CARLISLE MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr Tim Jepson, Deputy Clerk to the Magistrates, kindly arranged for me to meet some of the local Magistrates and sit with District Judge Gerald Chalk for the morning, which I found fascinating and so different from the Crown Court cases.

He is kindly arranging for me to sit at Kendal, Workington and Barrow over the next few months.

ALLERDALE BOROUGH COUNCIL - ANNUAL CIVIC SERVICE

3PM

A fine Procession of 16 Mayors and their consorts, myself as High Sheriff together with my husband, The Mace Bearer and Canon Geoffrey Ravalde.

David and I attended this lovely service for the Worshipful Mayor and Mayoress of Allerdale, Councillor John Binky Armstrong and Mrs Mara Armstrong. Canon Geoffrey Ravalde conducted the service and gave an excellent address. The first lesson was read by Cllr Robert Hardon, the Deputy Mayor of Allerdale, and the second by the Mayor of Allerdale. Prayers were lead by Father Peter Hart, St Cuthbert's Church, Wigton and later by The Reverend Kim Hurst, Methodist Minister from Wigton.

After the Service there was a Reception in marquees in the Church garden. Delicious food and an opportunity to meet people.

It was also very nice to see the new stained glass windows that were recently commissioned by Lord Bragg at St Mary's Church. Evidently the work was done by Brian Campbell, a local artist and a friend of Lord Bragg, with specific requests as to the contents of the designs, and they were then brought to life by a stained glass artist, Alex Hayes, depicting some of Wigton's most loved and historic landmarks.

The present Church was constructed in 1787-9 on the site of a much earlier Church.

VISIT OF HER ROYAL HIGHNESS, THE PRINCESS ROYAL, TO CUMBRIA, TO THE INTERNATIONAL SHEEP DOG TRIALS AT LOWTHER, PENRITH, CUMBRIA

A most splendid summer's day held at a most stunning venue.

I arrived as requested at about 12.30pm and met The Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Mr Roger Bingham, The Corporate Director, Organisational Development of Cumbria County Council, Mr Jim Savage,The Chairman, Eden District Council, Councillor Malcolm Smith and Mrs Patricia Smith, and The Chief Executive of the International Sheep Dog Society, Mr Norman Lorton. We were served with a buffet lunch whilst waiting for HRH. She arrived at about 1.15pm

Mr Lorton explained a little of the background to The International Sheepdog Society, which I believe goes back to the early 19th Century.

Caroline, The Dowager Countess of Lonsdale, who is President of The International Sheepdog Society, was also present.

We were presented to HRH by The Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, after which she was escorted by The Chief Executive of The Society and presented to The Presidents of The English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh Sheep Dog Societies, as well as The Solicitor to the International Sheep Dog Society.

After this HRH was escorted by The Chief Executive and The Sporting Events Organiser from the marquee to the Grandstand, to watch the Trial in progress, and to meet with some of the competitors. We were fortunate to join her and watch the Trials, after which we followed her as she looked around the various Trade Stands. She was due to leave at 14.05, but she was obviously enjoying her afternoon and did not leave until after 3.00pm.

40th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF KENDAL TORCHLIGHT CARNIVAL/PROCESSION - Friday 11th September 2009

As Guests of The Chairman of South Lakeland District Council, Councillor Jonathan Brook and The Mayor of Kendal, Councillor John Bateson, we arrived at Kendal Town Hall at 6.30pm where we were greeted with many familiar faces and a wonderful buffet provided for what seemed to be over 100 people. At 7.45pm we were taken outside to the SPECIAL seating that was provided and proceeded to watch the procession.

I had not been to The Torchlight Procession for some years and certainly did not remember anything as special as this occasion. The whole thing was enormous fun and every Float deserved much praise.

A most enjoyable evening.

Thursday 10th September 2009

THE WESTMORLAND COUNTY SHOW

As guests of Mrs Doreen Galbraith, The President of The Westmorland County Show, David and I enjoyed refreshments and met a great many people we knew in the President's Marquee. It was a very nice start to what was a very beautiful hot sunny day.

After that we looked at many of the stalls and visited one or two stands, including Michael Hodgsons, and later joined friends for a picnic lunch.

An altogether enjoyable day, with what must have been thousands of visitors. It was obvious that so much hard work and effort had gone in to all the preparations and we felt that on this day The Committee would really reap the rewards that they deserved.

GOLDEN JUBILEE OF THE CONCECRATION
OF THE PARISH CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF APPLEBY

I was invited by Father Alex, the Parish Priest, to attend the above which I greatly enjoyed. I was made extremely welcome by everyone present and it was good to see Cllr Lance Thwaites, The Mayor of Appleby and The Chairman of Eden District Council and his wife.

A beautiful service of Mass, conducted by The Rt Reverend Michael Campbell OSA, Bishop of Lancaster, in which I was delighted to take part.

Sadly because of pressure of time I was unable to join in the buffet lunch at Ormside Hall given by Mr and Mrs Fraser after the service.

Thursday 4th September 2009

ROSEHILL THEATRE
MORESBY, WHITEHAVEN.

50th Birthday Celebrations and Concert

We were invited by Richard Elder, Director, to attend a Reception and Exhibition of the Rosehill Archive at The Beacon in Whitehaven at 6pm followed by a Classical Concert at Rosehill at 8pm.

The Concert had been arranged and sponsored by the Hungarian Cultural Centre and was in the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary, Her Excellency Ms Borbala Czako. The programme featured Sonatas by Bach and Brahms and an Adagio by Kodaly were very beautiful.

The Concert started with an Introduction featuring Melvyn Bragg, Mary Burkett and Lord Snowdon and an old film of Sir Nicholas Sekers.

For me this was a very nostalgic occasion as I had first visited the Theatre in 1965 and had met both Sir Nicholas and Lady Sekers. Thomas Messel, nephew of Oliver Messel who was responsible for the theatre's beautiful interior, was also at the theatre with his family. He was giving a talk about Oliver Messel the following evening.

GRASMERE LAKELAND SPORTS AND SHOW

My husband and I were invited by Hal Bagot, Chairman of The Grasmere Sports Committee Ltd, and his fellow Directors, to join them as guests of the Company. Neither of us had been for some years and were most impressed by the changes that had taken place during that time. The day was well attended, but would I am sure have had many more visitors had the weather been kinder.

As tradition has it, The High Sheriff of Cumbria, or Consort, is invited to judge the embroidery on the outfits of the traditionally dressed competitors in the Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling.

I had to judge three groups comprising young girls, young boys and young men, and there were three prizes in each category. It was very difficult judging as all the embroidery was beautifully done and carefully thought out. It was fascinating watching the wrestlers, some of whom were from France and Scotland, as well as England.

VISIT TO WINDERMERE FIRE STATION

It was arranged that I would visit Windermere Fire Station at a later date, when my husband and I visited Cockermouth with Dominic Harrison. When I arrived I was delighted to find Canon Graham Bettridge, who is Chaplain to the Police and has recently been asked to be Chaplain to the Fire Service, there as well.

We were provided with an insight into the difficult and challenging Road Traffic Collision (RTC) work the service undertake. The evening started with a meet and greet with Watch Manager Wayne Ducksbury, who runs the station on a day to day basis, Station Manager Callum Graham, who has overall responsibility for the station and Deputy Chief Fire Officer John Moorcroft, who has strategic responsibility and who also brought along Canon Bettridge.

After a brief on the evenings events, Canon Bettridge and I donned protective clothing consisting of fire kit, goggles, gloves and helmets and volunteered to sit in a vehicle in order to experience all the effects surrounding the extrication from a vehicle following an accident.

Fire appliances "attended" and the priority was first to protect the scene and stabilise the casualties by a paramedic trained Firefighter and colleague entering the vehicle to reassure us and prevent further head movement which could damage the spinal cord. Whilst this was going on fire crews had laid out equipment to -

1. deal with a fire should the fuel ignite
and
2. hydraulic rescue equipment and first aid kits.
With us stabilised, the crew then started forcing open the doors using hydraulic spreaders which have a spreading capacity of several tonnes. Relatively low speed accidents often cause the doors to jam due to the deformation of the car which is designed to crumple, absorbing the energy of the accident and protecting the occupants. With doors open, the crew then worked on removing the roof of the vehicle using cutters which are capable of cutting through the columns of a car like a knife through butter.

With the roof removed and doors open we calmly got out of the car and made our way to the "recovery" room for a cup of tea and a debrief.

Whilst carrying out the drill, one of the fire engines was pulled away to a report of a fire in the village, which fortunately turned out to be a false alarm.

We were told that Crews across the county deliver Road Awareness Training to ALL year 11 pupils, ALL Young Firefighter attendees, ALL Pass Plus (additional new driver training) attendees, and other groups who request the hard hitting input which is delivered by the Fire and Rescue Service in order to contribute to reduction of the number of killed or seriously injured people on Cumbria's roads.

MINTFEST
VIP RECEPTION at the Brewery Arts Centre, Highgate, Kendal
To celebrate the opening of The Festival

7pm

I was invited by Jenny Graham (Kendal Arts International) to attend this Reception, along with a large group of people, including Tim Farron MP, The Mayor of Kendal, John Bateson, Ian and Claire Stephens. The Reception lasted one hour and after that everyone was invited to experience the exceptional variety of exciting Events that were on offer that evening.

The Festival dates were the 27th to the 30th August and on Friday afternoon Kendal seemed extremely crowded, and I believe that all the hotels and guest houses in the area were full because of Mintfest.

A VISIT TO ENERGUS AT LILLYHALL

1pm
As guests of Dr Ian Hudson, we were invited with Cllr H Wormstrup, and Dr Adam Naylor to lunch and a fascinating guided tour of the building. I can do no better than quote from their own web.site to describe it.

Energus will be a world class centre for the provisions of vocational skills excellence, spanning both further and higher education in the nuclear, carbon-free and environmental restoration industries. It will be a dedicated centre of excellence and innovation, with a range of training, education and business support services geared to providing and enhancing skills within both the local and national workforce, and making the most of the opportunities these industries hold.

This iconic development is a key part of the drive to turn West Cumbria into a global centre for energy, environment and technology, consistent with the aims of the West Cumbria Masterplan and the Energy Coast Initiative, and has I am sure a great future.

The two-storey iconic building was a pleasure to see and is a wonderful venue for the initiative.

VISIT TO WESTMORLAND GENERAL HOSPITAL

1.00pm
At the invitation of Professor Eddie Kane, Chair of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust and Tony Halsall, Chief Executive, we met at the Chief Executiv's Office, Trust Headquarters for a lengthy discussion regarding the future plans for the Hospital. We felt gratly reassured by what we heard.

We were taken to the Renal Unit to be met by the Unit Manager, Rowan Worsman, and were told a lot about the running of the unit and were able to talk to some of the patients being given dialysis.

After this we visited the Primary Care Assessment Service and were met by the Unit Manager, Angela Dobson and the Ward Manager Alison Hadwin.

Eddie Kane and Tony Halsall accompanied us the whole time and we felt priviledged to have spent the afternoon doing this.

We left at about 3.45pm.

As has always been the case for me it is a pleasure to visit The Westmorland General Hospital. Perhaps because it is smaller than many hospitals it seems cosier. We also felt that the future could be very bright for the Hospital.

2pm

I met with Lucy Sclater, who did the wonderful flowers in the marquee at Rydal Hall, and is also a very good photographer. She was taking photographs to provide a portrait to hang in Carlisle County Council Offices at the end of my Year of Office.

4pm UNIVERSITY OF CUMBRIA - EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY LUCY CAVENDISH
"Reflections of Life"

At the invitation of Andrew Lucas, Senior Executive Office of The Lake District Summer Festival, I attended the Official Opening at The University of Cumbria.

Many people attended the opening and Renna Kellaway spoke about the Festival and Lucy's paintings and Susan Crew,Editor of Harpers & Queen (and Lucy's aunt) made a charming speech.

I left the Exhibition at 5pm.

7pm - Coronation Hall in Ulverston
And a Civic Reception in the Anti-Room

Again, at the invitation of Andrew Lucas, My husband and I attended the first evening performance of The Lake District Cummer Music Festival and a Civic Reception. We met The Mayor of Ulverston and Renna and David Kellaway and several people local to Ulverston.

The Concert, which was excellent, was given by the Northern Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Denis McCaldin, Director of the Haydn Society and blogger-in-residence for BBC Radio 3 during this Haydn bicentenary year. As well as a line up of esteemed soloists, one of which was Denis's daughter, Clare McCaldin (mezzo-soprano). The Community Chorus which had been established for this performance and had engaged singers from across the region (one of whom was Denis McCaldin's wife, Meg) was excellent.
An altogether delightful evening.

SELLAFIELD SITE VISIT

9.30am
Visitor's Centre

Thanks to Dominic Harrison, Chief Fire Officer, who kindly arranged for us to take a party of people to Sellafield for a guided tour and buffet lunch, David and I took 16people with us as guests, including Ian Stevens (Chief Executive of Cumbria Tourism)James Richards (my Chaplain), Bill Smith (Mayor of Windermere) and various other people involved in Business and/or Tourism.

We were met by The Chief Fire Officer and two guides who did everything possible to give us an interesting and enjoyable day.

At the end of the tour each one of the guests expressed their amazement at the size of the Sellafield Site and of course the intricacy of everything that we saw.

We had two splendid guides who gave us real insight as to what is going on at the Site, and answered our many questions with pleasure.

The day ended at about 4pm and we all came away with a great deal to think about.

CUMBRIA PROBATION SERVICE ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Rheged, Penrith.

"Cumbria Probation - Serving the Community"

9.30am
I was invited to attend this stimulating day which ended after lunch at about 2.30pm. The conference was opened by The Chair of Cumbria Probation Service, Richard Rhodes. Tony Cunningham - MP for Workington and Annette Hennessy - Acting Chief Officer Cumbria Probation Service, and Caroline Marsh (Director of Offender Management,North West Region) spoke before refreshments at 11.15. This break gave an opportunity for coffee and networking. Canon David Peacock spoke after the break, followed by Professor John Ashton (Director of Public Health and County Medical Officer, Cumbria).

A most stimulating Conference, very well attended by members of Cumbria Constabulary, Mr Martin Farquhar - Governor of HM Haverigg Prison, Michelle Skeer, Assistant Chief Constable and many others from Local Organisations.

I suggested to the Chair that next year the High Sheriff Elect might also be invited to the Conference as it would be an ideal chance for them to network and meet a lot of people before their Year of Office begins.

Monday 27th July 2009

WINDERMERE TOWN COUNCIL
MEETING HELD IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS at 7.00pm

I was invited by Cllr Bill Smith, The Mayor of Windermere, to attend their Council Meeting. I was genuinely keen to do this as I met people whose names I had known for a long time and others who I actually knew, and it was interesting to see them all in their capacity as Councillors.

A variety of matters were discussed, but most particularly the Windermere Air Show which had taken place on the 25th and 26th July.

One of the major concerns was the inadequate provision of lavatory facilities for the thousands of people who attended. It is obviously very difficult to provide for a one-off event like this and the matter is doubtless going to be considered more fully before next year.

The meeting ended shortly after 9.30pm.

CIRCUIT HIGH COURT JUDGES MESS IN CARLISLE (Black Tie)

7.30pm
I was invited by Richard Tetlow, Junior of The Northern Circuit, to attend a dinner at The Crown Hotel, Wetheral. The Hon Mr Justice McCoombe and The Hon Mr Justice Black (who were sitting on Circuit)were invited, as well as His Hon Judge Batty QC and Her Hon Judge Forrester from Carlisle. There were also several QC's, retired Judges and other members of the Judiciary present.

After dinner Richard Marks QC, gave an entertaining talk and then introduced the Speaker, The Hon Mr Justice McCoombe. As one of the three strangers, I was sworn in by the Crier, John Roe QC, who delivered an unusual and most interesting Oath.

I travelled with The Lord Lieutenant and we had a very interesting evening and it was nice to be able to talk about it on the way back home.

HERITAGE DAY - RICHMOND, NORTH YORKSHIRE, TOWN HALL

We left home at 7.30am.
9.30am arrived at the Town Hall where we were greeted by the Town Clerk, Mr Geoff Coates and the Town Mayor and his wife, Mr and Mrs David Gillson.

After a delicious light breakfast of 'bacon butties' we were given a short audio visual display and briefing for the day. And photographs of the assembled company were taken.

At 11.00am we joined the RED tour for a motorised vantage view points tour which included the grade II listed train station, which was converted in 2007 into shops offices and cinemas and has been most sympathetically done. We would like to return to do some shopping! We were travelling on a RED London double-decker Ringmaster bus and had marvellous views of the castle and over the town. After the station we visited the very beautiful Temple Grounds, but did not see as much as we would like to have done as it started to pour with rain.

13.30 hours - returned to the Town Hall for a hearty lunch and at 14.30 visited Richmondshire Museum, The Green Howards Museum and the very beautiful Georgian Theatre.

17.00 hours - Tea at the Town Hall and farewells.

We learnt that this is a Bi-annual event and is obviously done to promote tourism and it is very well done indeed. Both my husband and I would like to return some time to do some shopping and to attend the Theatre! The whole thing was beautifully organised and we were all made to feel very welcome.

Thursday 9th July 2009

We were invited by The Lord Chamberlain on behalf of Her Majesty to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace today. Very showery in the morning but a lovely summer afternoon for the Garden Party. 30th June to 6th July 2009

RYDAL HALL

This has been an exceptionally busy time. We were preparing for four functions on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th July. The venue, the croquet lawn at Rydal Hall.

The Diocese of Carlisle had very kindly agreed some time before that we could use this beautiful venue for two Receptions that David and I were going to host on the 2nd and 3rd July, for Members of the Judiciary, and Officials, and Local people very much involved in the community and Friends.Nearly 500 people attended over the 2 evenings. The weather was wonderful, the Caterers and helpers excelled themselves and lovely music was provided at both events by the Burneside Band.

On the 4th July The Calvert Trust and The Order of St Lazarus hosted a Ball for 170 people in the marquee which was not only greatly enjoyed by all present, but which raised £14,000 to be shared between the two Charities.

On the following day, The Rt Revd James Newcome, The Bishop of Penrith, and the Directors of Rydal Hall gave an afternoon reception for The Urban Church Fund, and provided cream teas and music in the marquee and an opportunity to see the very beautiful gardens. The afternoon was a great success. Visitors were very generous with donations towards the Fund

MONDAY 6TH JULY

Clearing up, loose ends day. Thanking everyone who had worked so hard to make all the Events so special.

7pm
LADYHOLME CENTRE, WINDERMERE

I was invited by Debbie Binch to attend the Windermere and Staveley District Neighbourhood Forum which I did with great interest, having lived in or near Windermere since I was 19 years old.

I was very inerested in the matters discussed. Cllr Jo Stephenson Chaired the meeting. Community Police Officer Sarah Blacow was present, and the Mayor of Windermere, Bill Smith, wearing his hat as Windermere Town Mayor spoke about future plans. Representatives of various local Projects either gave updates or voiced their approval or concerns on various matters.

The meeting ended at 9.30pm.

THURSDAY 9th July
9.30am - Windermere Fire Station

I was invited by Callum Graham to attend an Awards Ceremony for Young Firefighter Cadets from The Lakes School this afternoon. Sadly I had to refuse because of a prior engagement for this afternoon, but I went to meet some of the twelve 15 year olds, and watch them practice this morning. The Fire Fighters who were involved with the young Cadets showed great enthusiasm towards their training, and it was reflected in the way they were obviously not only enjoying their training, but benefitting from it.

Andy Beeforth, Director, spoke and also Peter Hensman who is a Trustee of The Foundation.

11.30am
BARROW IN FURNESS TOWN HALL
CIVIC SUNDAY

As guest of The Mayor Barrow, Councillor Mrs Dorothy Dawes, I attended the Civic Procession from the Town Hall to St Mary's Church. I was accompanied by the New Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Cllr Roger Bingham, as we lined in pairs for the Procession.

A lovely church service with some rousing hymns and after the National Anthem, the Mace Bearer collected the Mayor's Chaplain, and Father Watson and escorted them from the Church.

After the procession we went back to the Town Hall. All the Organisations marched past the saluting 'dais' where the Mayor took the salute and the parade was dismissed.

Afterwards the Mayor's party and guests were invited into the Town Hall for luncheon.

(I took the opportunity to mention the Old Courthouse in Windermere and its dilapidated state, to the Chairman of the County Council. He promises to look into the matter)

Thursday 18th June 2009

5.45pm
Evensong at The Temple Church, Temple, London, including a tribute to The Office of High Sheriffs of England and Wales by The Rt Rev John Pritchard, The Bishop of Oxford who gave a most interesting and moving account of how he sees the Office of High Sheriff.

This was followed by an excellent Dinner for High Sheriffs in The Inner Temple Hall. 47 High Sheriffs and Consorts were present, plus members of the Judiciary and distinguished guests, solicitors or Masters.

An altogether memorable evening which it was a privilege to attend.

Monday 15th June 2009

A DAY WITH THE CUMBRIA FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE AT HEADQUARTERS
IN COCKERMOUTH

We were collected by Dominic Harrison, Corporate Director Safer & Stronger Communities/Chief Fire Officer and driven to Cockermouth where we were able to visit the Communication Centre where all incidents are monitored and acted upon.

We then met with the Senior Management Team, who described the considerable amount of work that they do with the public in their own homes so that the risk of fires is reduced. This has been very successful - the evidence being the greatly reduced number of incidents in the County over the past year. They also have a very strong educational programme with schools.

We were shown films of the serious road accidents to which the fire service is called where the officers are required to release the injured and the dead.

The day should have ended with an exercise with the Windermere Fire Service where they would have simulated the release from a crashed car. However, the crew within 3 other teams from Staveley and Kendal were attending a fire in Staveley and Dominic took us to the incident which he needed to attend.

I don't think we appreciated until today just what some of these brave officers have to contend with and like our Police Force they are very special types of people.

11.00am WINDERMERE POLICE STATION

I had arranged to see Inspector Janice Spedding who introduced me to various members of her team and explained a little of how they operate in the area. Having lived in Windermere since the age of 19 I have known the police station for many years and seen many changes as an onlooker, so was particularly interested.

I was also shown the Old Court House which I gather is owned by the County Council. It was sad to see such an attractive building having fallen into such disrepair. I intend to try an find out if it is as forgotten as it looks. In such an ideal position between Windermere and Bowness it could surely serve as an asset to the area in some capacity.

Wednesday 10th June 2009

H M HAVERIGG PRISON - MILLOM, CUMBRIA

A visit to Haverigg Prison by invitation of the Governor, Mr Martin Farquhar. I was accompanied by David, my PA, Katy Glass, my Chaplain Revd James Richards, the Mayor of Windermere Bill Smith and the Town Centre Manager for Bowness,Windermere,Ambleside and Grasmere Paul Holdsworth and Mrs Anne Robinson.

Monday 8th June 2009

CUMBRIA CONSTABULARY HEADQUARTERS, CARLETON HALL, PENRITH
(A fascinating building built in 1800 on the site of a much earlier house).

As guests of Mr Craig Mackey the Chief Constable, David and I were welcomed by the Staff Office Inspector and taken to meet the Chief Constable and his Team.We joined then for coffee and were introduced to the new Deputy Chief Constable and two Assistant Chief Constables - the Head of Personnel and the Finance Officer.

I was asked about my aims for my year. I explained that I saw myself as a facilitator and that my aim was to encourage people/businesses etc. from different parts of the County to communicate.

After this we were introduced to the Sergeant in charge of Dog Handling and Training and spent an interesting time talking to him. Unfortunately there were very few dogs there that day - they were all 'on duty'. We hope to go back to see more.

Our third appointment was with an Inspector and Constable at the Armed Response Unit. A highly dedicated group of Officers, dealing with often very extreme situations. Members of this Unit all volunteer their services.

Here, calls from throughout Cumbria are responded to having been allocated levels of priority. This complex centre is powerful and impressive.

After a buffet lunch with the Chief Constable and Officers we were taken to the Communications Centre.

Wednesday 27th May 2009

THEATRE BY THE LAKE, KESWICK

Visit of HRH The Duke of Gloucester for the 10th Anniversary of the Theatre

Very wet, windy weather prevailed and prevented his helicopter from landing at Keswick for 11.30am. It was diverted to Carlisle where he was driven to Keswick.

Meanwhile the assembled guests, The Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, The Chairman of Cumbria County Council, The Mayor and Mayoress of Allerdale, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Keswick and other distinguished guests enjoyed a light buffet lunch.

After the late arrival of HRH he was introduced to several people, we had a light lunch and then accompanied Ms Vicki Robinson and Mr Graham Lamont (Joint Chairs of Cumbria Theatre Trust) on a guided tour of The Theatre.

Tuesday 2nd June 2009

The Rt Revd James Newcome, The Bishop of Penrith suggested an evening looking at Kendal and district and Appleby at night.

We were collected by Constable Ward at 9pm, but before we left Castle Hill the merits of the police car were pointed out to us.

A most interesting but quiet evening, although I was fascinated by the number of travellers, caravans, ponies and people lining much of the road between Kirkby Lonsdale and Appleby.

We returned to Castle Hill shortly after midnight.

After a reception where I met a number of members and had a delicious dinner, speeches were given by President Gail Inglis and other Officials. I spoke about the Office of The High Sheriff.

Evidently there are two Inner Wheel Groups, Workington and West Derwent, the 'younger' of the two organisations.

A very enthusiastic group of ladies who appeared to be really interested in the Shrievalty.

Tuesday 19th May 2009

DAY WITH CUMBRIA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Meeting with Deb Muscat, the Grants Development Officer for the above. We visited PITSTOP Project at Barrow in Furness.

P.P.B. is an approved provider of alternative curriculum being both an approved Centre for the open College network as well as Oxford, Cambridge and Royal Society of Arts Examination Centre. I was very impressed with what they do. They provide "real world work" for the students. I was delighted to remember that this was something that had been helped with funding by The Princes Youth Business Trust some years ago. So much enthusiasm and hard work goes into this most worthwhile project.

We were fascinated by the exhibits at The Beacon, and the activities for children. There was so much to see that we will go back, and possibly take our grandchildren.

We were then taken by bus to the Haig Colliery Museum, situated within the former site of Haig Pit on the cliffs high above Whitehaven, with magnificent views of the Scottish hills. This is an educational and informative attraction based on local mining history, and a visit is recommended.

After lunch we visited the RAF Military Museum at Haverigg. Again, so much of interest to see. It too requires another visit.

A most interesting and informative day highlighting some of the attractions of this part of West Cumbria.

Princes Youth Business Trust at Castle Green Hotel, Kendal

At 3.30pm today I met with Donna Brewsher, Executive-Business (Cumbria) and Mr John Marquiss - Area Organiser, Terry James - Panel Member, and various mentors, to discuss new developments within The Trust. At 4.30 pm as arranged 14 young people who had received business funding and advice from The Princes Trust gathered together to discuss their businesses and the help they had received, and also to share their successes and failures.

It was an interesting and rewarding afternoon hearing their stories. They were very appreciative of the help they had received.

The Event finished after refreshments, at 6.30pm.

H.R.H. The Prince of Wales - Red Squirrel Survival Trust

David and I arrived at Levens Hall at 9.45am where coffee and a delicious assortment of cakes and refreshments were offered prior to the arrival of The Prince of Wales at 10.15am, after which several people, including David and I, were asked to form a line outside Levens Hall to be presented to H.R.H.

The Lord Lieutenant mentioned to him that I was involved with The Princes Trust, and he chatted to me about the National Appeal for his 40th birthday over 20 year's ago, when I had Chaired the Appeal for Cumbria.

After a stimulating talk given by H.R.H. supporting the work of the new Trust throughout the British Isles, he walked round the Levens Hall Gardens with Mr and Mrs Bagot, The Lord Lieutenant and Mrs Cropper.

He then departed for North Cumbria accompanied by The Lord Lieutenant and Mrs Cropper.

Cumbria Constabulary Awards Ceremony

At the invitation of Mr Craig Mackey QPM, Chief Constable of Cumbria Constabulary, I attended a Constabulary Awards Ceremony at The Roundthorn Country House Hotel. In the past this Ceremony has been held at Carleton Hall, but on this occasion The Chief Constable had decided that it would be very nice if the families of those involved in the Awards could be present at the Ceremony. A buffet supper was also given and all the families were delighted to see their loved ones gain these Awards and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

I must say it made me feel very proud and humble to be there and to realise, if I had not already done so, what a wonderful service the Police in this County give us. Many of the things for which male and female Officers were commended were items that had appeared briefly in various newspapers over the last few years. That of course made me realise how little we are really told, and how much more these people actually do.

I drove home that evening feeling that I had experienced something very special.

Saturday 28th March 2009 - The retirement of Bishop Graham Dow, Bishop of Carlisle

I will be attending a Service at Carlisle Cathedral at 2.30pm to mark the retirement of Bishop Graham Dow, The Bishop of Carlisle

Friday 27th March 2009 - Kendal Hydrotherapy Pool

I shall be helping to sell raffle tickets at Morrisons Supermarket in Kendal between 1pm and 3pm in aid of The Kendal Hydrotherapy Pool. They have a £10,000 deficit this year and money is always needed on top of this to renew equipment.

Inauguration of the High Sheriff of Cumbria, Mrs Susan Thornely DL, 25th March 2009

Yesterday, 25th March 2009 was my Inauguration as High Sheriff of Cumbria. My name was 'pricked' by Her Majesty the Queen on the 18th March, but I was nominated four year's ago by a former High Sheriff.

The Ceremony took place in the Nisi Prius Court in Carlisle. I was accompanied by my Chaplain, the Revd James Richards of St Martin's Church, Windermere. Her Honour Judge Barbara Forrester, Eldred Curwen, my elder son (a Cumbrian Magistrate) and Mrs Margaret Dalgliesh (Justice of the Peace) were presiding.

I was very pleased to have my son at the Ceremony, and one or two people have suggested that it might be a first for The High Sheriff's son to sign the official documents for his mother. I do not know if this is so. But in Cumbria I am sure it will be a first for lady High Sheriffs.

A Procession, consisting of The Mayor of Carlisle, The Chief Executive of the City, The Mace Bearer and Sword Bearer, the Under Sheriffs of the Bailiwicks of Cumberland and Westmorland, The Chairman of Cumbria County Council and other dignitaries, The Justice of the Peace, The Magistrate Mr Eldred Curwen, and the Circuit Judge, Her Honour Judge Barbara Forrester, my Chaplain, the Outgoing High Sheriff and his Chaplain, and Mr James Cropper, The Lord Lieutenant of the County, walked from the Council Offices to the Courts accompanied by Trumpeters.

After the Ceremony the guests attended an official lunch given by Cllr Tom Clare, Chairman of Cumbria County Council, and was greatly enjoyed by everyone.

For me this was a special day as I felt blessed to have with me my husband David, Eldred and his wife Kate and my younger son Johnnie, who had flown over from France especially for the occasion.

The post of High Sheriff is unsalaried, and the incumbent pays for all his or her own expenses throughout the year. This Inaugural lunch, however, is generously funded each year by Cumbria County Council, to welcome the Incoming High Sheriff.
